Alexandre Zhu (1993), d’origine chinoise, partage son enfance entre Shanghaï et Paris. Il est diplômé en 2018 de l’ENSAD avec un passage à la School of Visual Art de New York. Influencé par la transformation massive de sa ville d’origine, sa pratique du dessin questionne les environnements urbains et mondialisés.
Lauréat du prix Pierre David-Weill en 2021 et du Prix Dauphine pour l’art contemporain en 2022, son travail est ensuite sélectionné pour la Biennale Artpress la même année. Il a depuis participé à plusieurs expositions collectives en France et à l’étranger (MO.CO Panacée, Galerie Bertrand Grimont, Galerie Valérie Delaunay...), et poursuit aujourd’hui en tant que résident chez POUSH à Aubervilliers.
«Les dessins d’Alexandre Zhu sont réalisés au fusain, technique séculaire lui permettant d’interroger les mutations croissantes des milieux urbains. Son travail se fonde sur l’observation de cet environnement, ces zones à l’aspect transitoire semblables aux ruines provisoires d’une société mondialisée. Pour la série Leviathan, laquelle tire son nom de la figure mythologique à l’ambiguïté certaine, l’artiste s’intéresse aux machines nécessaires à l’édification de bâtiments.
Par l’usage du fragment, les formes figuratives y sont détournées : détachées de tout environnement, elles se révèlent à la jointure d’un univers abstrait. L’œil n’arrive alors plus à identifier la nature exacte des appareils représentés, ni même à distinguer leur fonctionnalité car seule leur force expressive demeure soulignée. De ces objets standardisés, l’artiste n’en retient que la structure personnifiée. L’attrait pour la matière y est lisible, le fusain suggérant les plis du métal, la vigueur de l’acier. Les surfaces sont travaillées en plusieurs couches, puis effacées : la lumière s’y faufile, toute trace de trait disparaît.
Encounters at the end of time pousse plus loin encore cette investigation vouée à l’épure. Le geste se fait plus ample, le cadrage resserré. Le détail côtoie ici une certaine monumentalité. Alexandre Zhu célèbre alors ce qui se tient hors du temps, ces forces impénétrables dont il serait vain d’en percevoir la fin, tout comme le commencement.»

Alexandre Zhu (1993), of Chinese origin, spent his childhood between Shanghai and Paris. He graduated from ENSAD in 2018 with an exchange at the School of Visual Art in New York. Influenced by the ever-changing environment of his family’s hometown, his charcoal drawing practice revolves around the globalized urban environment.
Laureate of the Pierre David-Weill Prize in 2021 and Prix Dauphine in 2022, his work is selected for the Artpress Biennale the same year. He then participated in several group exhibitions in France and abroad (MO.CO Panacée, Galerie Bertrand Grimont, Galerie Valérie Delaunay...). «Alexandre Zhu’s drawings are made in charcoal, an age-old technique that allows him to question the growing changes in urban places. His work is based on the observation of this environment, these transitional areas similar to the temporary ruins of a globalized society. For the Leviathan series, which takes its name from the mythological figure with a certain ambiguity, the artist is interested in the machines necessary for the construction of buildings.
Through the use of the fragment, the figurative forms are diverted: detached from any environment, they reveal themselves at the junction of an abstract universe. The eye can no longer identify the exact nature of the devices represented, nor even distinguish their functionality because only their expressive force remains underlined. Of these standardized objects, the artist retains only the personified structure. The attraction for the material is readable there, the charcoal suggesting the folds of the metal, the vigor of the steel. Surfaces are worked in several layers, then erased: the light sneaks in, all traces of lines disappears.
Encounters at the end of time pushes this investigation even further, which is dedicated to purity. The gesture becomes wider, the framing tighter. The detail here meets a certain monumentality. Alexandre Zhu then celebrates what stands outside of time, these impenetrable forces of which it would be vain to perceive the end, just like the beginning.»
